Preliminary results

When the reference laboratory receives specimens and begins to perform the testing, preliminary results will be reported for early review. Preliminary results are identified with a red P next to them.

To view preliminary results, navigate to and do any of the following:

  • Toolbar > Patient Clipboard > F2 to search for and select a client: In the patient history area, select the laboratory result line item to open the Detailed Lab Results window.
  • Toolbar > Lab Requests and Results: Uncheck Hide preliminary results.
  • Toolbar > Daily Planner > Diagnostics tab: Uncheck Hide preliminary results.

Completed results

Completed lab results will display based on whether the Review results before posting option was selected in the Laboratory settings: Activities > Laboratory > Select IDEXX or INCLINIC > Update.

  • If Review results before posting is checked:
    • Results will be marked as completed.
    • All completed results for that lab will be displayed in the Lab Requests and Results window or the Daily Planner Diagnostics tab.
    • Results can be changed to posted in the Lab Requests and Results window.
    • After the result is posted, it will be available in patient history on the Patient Clipboard.
  • If Review results before posting is not checked:
    • All completed results for that lab are marked as posted.
    • They can be viewed in the patient history or in the Daily Planner Diagnostics tab.

To view completed results and manually post to patient records navigate to Toolbar > Lab Requests and Results.

  1. Double-click the row to review, or highlight the row and then click Update. The system displays the Detailed Lab Results window, which shows information for specific tests.
  2. Verify the result details, and post the results to the Patient File as follows:
    • To post results: Click the down arrow next to the Status field and select Posted.
    • To assign the results to a different patient: Click Reassign.

If a template is shared among multiple results, the Cumulative Lab Results window opens instead of the Detailed Lab Results window. Follow these steps:

  1. To post results from the Cumulative Lab Results window, right-click the row and select Details.
  2. From the Details window, click the down arrow next to the Status field and select Posted.
  3. Right-click and select Comments to view or edit.
Note: If any part of a request has been completed, changes cannot be made. The system will display the View Lab Request window.

Detailed lab results

The Detailed Lab Result Set window allows you to view laboratory results, including:

  1. VetConnect PLUS results
  2. IDEXX Lab Report: Includes all results associated with a lab request for IDEXX in-house and reference labs.
    • For in-house lab requests, the report splits results by device in subgroups, within the report.
  3. Individual request components, under Lab Results.

Notes:

  • For IDEXX in-house laboratory reports, if the exact profile was run previously for the patient, those previous test results are provided in an additional column on the right side of the report. This is helpful for viewing an at-a-glance comparison of results over time.
  • Non-IDEXX results that are imported into the patient record are displayed in the Lab results window. VetConnect PLUS and IDEXX Lab report are not available.

Viewing Results

To open the Detailed Lab Result window, navigate to and do one of the following:

  • Toolbar > Patient Clipboard
    • On the Summary, Text or Lab tab, right-click the lab result row in the history.
    • Select View Detailed Lab Result Set or double-click the IDEXX Lab Report row.
  • Toolbar > Daily Planner > Diagnostics tab: Double-click a result or Report type result row.
  • Toolbar > Lab Requests and Results window
    • Double-click a result or Report type result row.
    • Note that result lines appear on the Lab Requests and Results window only if the Review results before posting check box has been selected for that lab (in the Lab Information window Preferences area).

When finished, click OK to close the Detailed Lab Result Set window.

Note: For IDEXX results, the last tab displayed will be displayed by default the next time the Detailed Lab Result Set window opens. Example: If the last tab open was VetConnect PLUS, that tab will open by default the next time.

Use the IDEXX lab report or update/post lab results

To use the IDEXX Lab Report, update or post lab results, do the following:

  1. Open the desired IDEXX Lab Report in the Detailed Lab Result Set window.
  2. If all results for a lab request have the same status, you can change the status for all of the results at once, rather than having to update each result separately.
    • Example: All Completed.
    • Click the Lab Results tab.
    • Check the Update all statuses check box on the Detailed Lab Result Set window.

  3. If all results do not share the same status, you can click the Lab Results tab and update each result separately as needed.
    • Select the desired result from the drop-down list in the top-left corner of the Lab Results tab.
    • Change the status.
    • Do any of the following:
      • Reassign or print lab results.
      • Perform or schedule a call back.
      • Update lab comments for the selected result.
  4. When finished, click OK to close the Detailed Lab Result Set window.

Notes:

  • The OK button is disabled if the staff member does not have appropriate security permissions to update the laboratory result type(s) included in the set.
  • If all results for the request were posted, the IDEXX Lab Report, and associated results, is saved to patient history. It will be available in the patient’s electronic medical record at any time from the Patient Clipboard.
  • Once an IDEXX Lab Report, and associated results is posted, it no longer appears as a row on the Lab Requests and Results window. It may continue to appear for a number of days on the Daily Planner Diagnostics tab, depending on how you have set the Include posted lab results from the last __ days field in Daily Planner defaults.

Rejected results

Laboratory results can be marked as Rejected if you find the results to be invalid.

Navigate to Toolbar > Lab requests and results.

  1. Double-click on a completed result, or highlight the row and click Update, to open the Detailed Lab Results window.
  2. From the Status drop-down list, select Rejected.
  3. If you then determine that the laboratory results should not be rejected, you can change the status from Rejected to Posted.

Notes:

  • After the results are posted to a patient’s record, they cannot be rejected. You may choose to void the results, but they will remain in the patient’s history as a voided record.
  • Rejected results are never included in the Cornerstone patient’s history. You can view rejected results in Cornerstone only if you select the Rejected Results check box on the Lab Requests and Results window. Rejecting a result in Cornerstone will not reject the result in VetConnect PLUS.

Viewing results in VetConnect Plus

VetConnect* PLUS lets you view and compare results from IDEXX in-house diagnostics and IDEXX Reference Laboratories side by side. VetConnect PLUS works within the standard Cornerstone workflow and has an enhanced format for viewing, comparing, and graphing result data. You can print results, share them (by email, Petly, or collaboration), and request a consultation.
Your most recent results are listed in the main VetConnect PLUS window.

  1. Select a result to display the data in a result window, along with the patient’s historical results, organized by date.
  2. Click a date tab to open the historical results for that date. You can also click History to see a list of all tests in chronological order.
  3. VetConnect PLUS automatically displays the selected analyte result side by side with other results for the same analyte for easy comparison. An icon indicates the result source. Example: An IDEXX in-house analyzer or the reference laboratory
  4. If more than three results are available, click the arrow to the right to see more.

Canceling or deleting a reference lab order

As long as the sample has not yet been scanned at the laboratory, deleting a request (canceling) will be communicated to the laboratory, and the sample will not be processed.
Once the sample is scanned at the laboratory, deleting a request in Cornerstone will display a message reminding you to call the laboratory to confirm the cancellation.
If you resubmit a request on a sample previously canceled, be sure to include the most recent requisition form with the request.

Sharing results from VetConnect PLUS

Print or share results (Email, Petly, Collaborate) using the Print or Share buttons.
VetConnect Plus can pull the client email address from Cornerstone’s client information. To activate this feature, contact the Lab Support team for details. This feature is only available in the U.S. and Canada for practices that are not Multi-location single database (MLSD) configured.

If you print, email, or share results to your patient’s Petly portal, you can click the Communications tab in the toolbar to view records of these activities.
