Cornerstone file structure
Cornerstone data is stored in 6 folders on your Cornerstone Database Server within the Cstone folder. The data is tied to client and patient records in Cornerstone and should not be deleted or you may receive errors. The information below will show you what kind of data each folder and subfolder contain. We suggest backing up the folders and files below daily through an IDEXX backup and/or local backup.
- C:\CStone\DailyCC
- C:\CStone\Images
- C:\CStone\Spell
- C:\CStone\Share
- C:\CStone\Results
- C:\CStone\Graphs
- C:\Cstone\cstone.db
- C:\Cstone\cstone.log
Where is my data stored and how?
Daily CC folder
- Daily copy of your live Cornerstone database that is created if you are set to run a backup using Unattended End of Day.
- Monthly copy of your live Cornerstone database that is created if you are set to run a backup using Unattended End of Month.
Images folder
- Stores images.
- This folder may exist in a location other than the Cstone folder on your Cornerstone Database Server. Example: a separate drive on the server or alternate workstation that stores images.
Spell folder
- Stores Cornerstone Spell check dictionary.
- Used when a user adds a word to the dictionary. This is a global file used by all workstations.
- To remove unwanted words, open the dict25.u file in notepad, and delete the unwanted word.
- Close and open Cornerstone to reflect the changes.
Share folder
C:\CStone\Share\Attachments
- Stores files attached to imaging cases created in the imaging module.
- Stores initial PDF that is attached to emails. These files are overwritten each time a new email for that patient is sent.
C:\CStone\Share\CS_Export
- Default storage location for the Controlled Substance Export files.
- Configured in Controls > Controlled Substance > Controlled Substance Export > Export.
C:\CStone\Share\Csdocs
- C:\CStone\Share\Csdocs\Doc1
- Stores Enhanced Medical Notes and Correspondence documents.
- Cleaned up by the IDEXX File Cleanup Service regularly.
- C:\CStone\Share\CSdocs\Doc2
- Stores the PDF of the estimate or document created when sending email or fax.
- These are overwritten for each patient and will not store past documents.
C:\CStone\Share\DE
- Files used by the 3rd party integration tool called Data Services.
C:\CStone\Share\EMRMedNotes
- Attachments to Enhanced Medical Notes and Correspondence documents.
- The date on these files is the date the file was last modified, not the date it was added into CS.The file name is incremental and can be found by opening the attachment on the document and looking at the title bar.
- When emailing medical notes that have attachments on them, Cornerstone also creates a second file with the actual name of the file in the EMRMedNotes folder.
- This does not happen with Correspondence.
- Correspondence uses the file that is already saved there with the numbered title.
C:\CStone\Share\EOYInvCost
- Stores PDF copies of the Inventory Cost Report and Inventory Cost Totals Report when End of Year is run.
C:\CStone\Share\Estimates
- C:\CStone\Share\Estimates\Docs1
- Stores signed estimates. If the estimate exists in this folder, it means it was signed.
- The file cleanup service does cleanup the unzipped files like the doc1 folder for documents.
- If this folder is not there, the IDEXX File Cleanup Service may not function properly.
C:\CStone\Share\Heska
- Stores Heska lab files.
C:\CStone\Share\Imaging
- Stores image files used by PACS.
C:\CStone\Share\Install
- Stores Cornerstone install files. Open version.txt to see the version of the files.
- C:\CStone\Share\Install\Download stores new install files.
- If a new Cornerstone version has been pushed to your server, these will contain the update that is available via Update Launcher.
- If a new Cornerstone version has already been installed, these will contain the same version as found in the Release folder.
- C:\CStone\Share\Install\Download stores new install files.
- C:\CStone\Share\Install\Release stores install files that have been used to install the version on the server.

cstone.db and cstone.log files
The Cornerstone database and its associated log file store structured data in the form of tables, rows, and columns. This data includes client details such as name, address, and phone number, as well as patient information including name, species, breed, markings, etc. Cornerstone support has the capability to retrieve, modify, and delete data within the database using SQL (Structured Query Language) commands. To prevent data loss or corruption, these operations should be performed exclusively by Cornerstone Support. Please Note: Cornerstone Support has SQLs that can be ran at no cost with a support contract, but any custom requests will be billable.
